Diversity in housing

02 december 2005

A terrace house in a convivial post-war neighborhood, a penthouse with breathtaking views over the river, a single-family dwelling on a peaceful estate or an old people's flat near the town centre: all these are to be found in Spijkenisse. The range of housing in the town has become more varied in recent years, and this trend is set to continue in the years to come.

Houses will be built on a substantial scale for first-time buyers, the elderly and the disabled. Houses and neighbourhoods will be built and laid out so that old and handicapped people will encounter as few physical obstacles as possible.

Regional range of shops
The Spijkenisse shopping precinct attracts costumers throughout the region. In particular, the shops in the town centre attract many buyers from outside of town. There is a respectable number of stores in Spijkenisse, but nevertheless, an expansion is always welcome. This perception is supported by the fact that there is sufficient consumer-spending capacity for an increase, among both the inhabitants of the surrounding municipalities and those of Spijkenisse itself. The average local income in Spijkenisse is above the average national income, while local taxes are among the lowest in the country.
Therefore, within the framework of the 'City Plan 2010', substantial new shop development will take place in the town centre of Spijkenisse, particularly in the more exclusive retailing sectors.

Busy town
There is no lack of activity in Spijkenisse. The town has a number of industrial estates, totaling around a hundred hectares in area. There are also various shopping centres. Retail trade, business services, construction and industry are the main foundations of the local economy, while education and health care are also major employers.
Employment in Spijkenisse has risen sharply in recent years, to approximately 18,700 full-time jobs. The municipality believes that this number must be even higher and it therefore aims to stimulate an increase in high-quality jobs, particularly in the field of research, consultancy and financial services.
