Spijkenisse's coat-of-arms is both old and new: old because it was born by the noble lords of Putten who ruled over the island in the Middle Ages, and new because it has only been Spijkenisse's municipal coat-of-arms since 1935.
Until that year Spijkenisse had no coat-of-arms, and it is thanks to its mayor at that time that a change came about.
In 1961 the municipality obtained the consent of Queen Juliana to decorate the arms with a gold crown. The colours of the arms are also repeated on the flag: blue, yellow (gold) and white (silver).
